Starz - Hawk's Eyrie
It's all about releasing your inner sociopath
I was looking at changing/updating our TV packages today, and one of the options is to upgrade to "Showtime/Starz". This is an additional $15/mo over the package I'm eying. If BF has at least 3 Showtime shows he wants to watch, that could make it interesting.

I'm mostly eying it because Starz was described to me as a "premium movie" channel and I was thinking of it as a substitute to finally getting Netflixs. I've glanced at some of the April schedules for them, and I'm not seeing the premium appeal.

Does anyone have Starz? Is it worthwhile as a Netflix substitute? Worthwhile on its own (and why)? Is it a waste of money?

Mood: curious

That's still true, but Starz started delaying things by 90 days now.

We don't have anything that would stream, unless you can stream on a laptop[1]. When the DVD player broke about 6 months ago, we thought about getting a BluRay that'd stream. But the cost was high enough[2] that we didn't feel the value proposition, so we just got the cheapest DVD player out there.

Now that prices are coming down, and we'll be upgrading our internet speed, we might consider getting something that streams. But, yes, we'd be more likely to use the discs.

[1]Which you probably can, knowing how things are going.
[2]We would have had to add a wireless card, since there's no way we're running a cable all the way downstairs. That jacked the price up out of "Whatever" into "More money than I care to spend, even if I can easily afford it".

You can view netflix on your laptop (Mac or PC, but you have to install the Silverlight stuff from Microsoft)

Netflix > Starz.

Thanks. BF was agreeing with me that Showtime wasn't worth it, and he feels that Starz isn't, either. I figured it wasn't, but I wanted to actually investigate it first before *knowing* it wasn't worth it.

My impressions from back when I had cable (you remember, living with M in that mess we called our place) and from visiting Mom's house, who has satellite:

Starz is a poor man's HBO. Gets almost the same movies, but fewer of them and later. It was always bundled with something else, and was a very cheap or free add-on to get.

So, meh.

Ick. Doesn't sound worth it at all.

Thanks for the info!

I went with HBO myself due to The Game of Thrones. I looked at Starz & Showtime, but we wanted to see The Game of Thrones more.

Depends on why you would want Netflix, and what kind of tv system you get currently.

If you have On Demand or a similar feature, you can get recent releases for a small fee and lots of recent tv shows and older movies for free.

Starz is nice to have if you like to see lots of popular sort-of-recent movies.

Nexflix is nice if you want to have the greatest variety of stuff available to get.
