Chemical tasting
I have allergies. No surprise, most people do. However, I have a bad reaction to chemicals, for lack of a better term. Where others smell a nifty perfume? I taste chemicals. Your body wash, hair spray, or scented shampoo? Guaranteed headache, nausea from a post-nasal drip, and a chemical taste for me.

The allergist I had seen just told me to take a Claritin a day. It had been helping, but the past month's been getting worse. Pounding sinus headaches, my heart-rate pounding at the rate of the headache, constant chemical taste... I am not a happy raptor.

Am I the only person who has this problem?

Yankee Candle is the worst. I have a stunted sense of smell, but that place makes me gag.

obsessivewoman and I have to hunt down the “Free and Clear” (we call them “Stench-Free”) variants of detergents, dryer sheets, etc. I just find the smells annoying; she actually gets a rash.

Bath & Body works can make me a little ill from overexposure.

But I love BPAL.

But in food? I can taste stuff that isn't normal.

Around the time that I hit 30 (and 30 hit back - thanks, LMB), I developed horrendous allergies to all sorts of personal hygiene products - my deodorant that I had worn since I was 13? Yep. My shampoo? Sure. Certain brands of shaving cream? Absolutely.

My allergist said that it was a shift in my body chemistry now that I am...... APPROACHING MIDDLE AGE!?!?!?!?!?!!!!!!

(So, here I sit, a smelly, barely shaven 34 year old with filthy frizzy hair.)

My allergist is a big believer in the double-wammy: both Allegra and Singulair. According to her, there are two different parts of the allergic reaction, and each one of those blocks one part.

Might be worth discussing with your allergist if a change in meds is worthwhile, since the Claritin doesn't seem to be helping as much.

Lesser life through chemistry...

I've always had allergies, but sometime in the last 5 - 7 years I started having the same sort of issues that you're having now. In that some tastes just come across as chemically and icky, ditto with fragrances etc.

I'm only just starting to really address it though, since I had several other issues that kind of overwhelemed it, due to the tremendous stressload I'd been carrying at my old job. (As a sidenote: It's really amazing how your doctor telling you that your job-stress is actually killing you will make you re-evaluate job offers).

I'm sorry to hear this - that's going to make life very hard as almost all products have some sort of scent.

I hope you're doing better.
