It's all about releasing your inner sociopath
RIP Robert Jordan, aka James Oliver Rigney, Jr
I was 16 when I first picked up the Tradepaper of Eye of the World in 1990, off the library shelf. It had only been checked out a few times, and the cover was already falling off, but I decided to read it anyway. It was slow sloughing through the first part of the book; once they got out of the woods and into the world, however, I couldn't put it down and read it all night.

I was 20 when a schoolmate told me about this Usenet group called alt.fan.robert-jordan. From there, I moved over to rec.arts.sf.written and saw the end of the Great Hoax. I started meeeting people from rasfw (rasfwrj later that summer). On September 24th, 1994, at the end of a social in NoVa, BF and I started to date. Last year, we married on our anniversary.

I met RJ at BaltiCon during his first con appearance, and several times after that. The last time I saw him was from a distance at San Diego ComicCon in 2004; some friends and I were eating at the same (bad Mexican) restaurant he was at.

Robert Jordan's work has had a great influence on me, and the friends I have been able to gather around me. While I don't enjoy his work as much as I used to, I would not be the person I am without the relationships I built due to his work.

We always joked about how he would die before the last book was finished. Yesterday, at age 58, James Rigney Jr died due to complications from amyloidosis, a rare blood disease. Both Dragonmount and Making Light have details. I can't imagine how hard this must be on his wife, Harriet.

The Light shine on you, and the Creator shelter you. The last embrace of the mother welcome you home.

Damn. This is out of the blue (for me.) The whole online world (i.e., apart from reading actual news from the Deccan Herald back in the 90's) opened up for me because of the WoT and the newsgroup. For a long time, that was the only forum I cared about (other than Real Life pursuits.) I haven't really kept up with the many people I came to know through his books and the ng, but I'm grateful to him for enabling and expanding my online horizons.

I know quite a few people who are going to be sad about this, for many reasons. And a few who will have mixed feelings about not feeling the intense need to buy and read another thousand-page monster every couple of years.

Years ago, it actually was BF's Humor page that first pointed me to rasfwr-j.

I was searching for WoT humor, and the search engine landed me on his WoT humor page. It was hilarious as heck, of course. But what really captured my imagination was the Socials page BF had written. You all sounded like you had an awesome time, and the Darkfriends sounded like fun people to be with. This was about 1996 or soish -- I was still in pre-med then. I lurked on rasfwr-j therafter until I joined the group in '99.

I had a lot of fun at the Bay Area Social you generously organized on my behalf back in '01 [1], and I still sincerely appreciate your putting that together. I haven't yet gotten the chance to hang out with the West Coast DF's as much as I would have liked. The DC and Midwest DF's, of course, are a whole different story.

If it weren't for his WoT/rasfwr-j web pages, I would have never known rasfwr-j existed. I would have never met you all. I would have never met _constantine, annewashere, missysedai or silmaril, just to name a few. So a sincere thanks to him, and to you, too.

It's been so long since I've read anything WoT related, but I also owe the series so many friendships.

I knew he was ill, but I'm so sorry to hear he's passed away.

Thanks for posting this, Hawk. I wouldn't have likely known about it otherwise.
