Some days you're the free milk; other days you're the eloped cow - Hawk's Eyrie
It's all about releasing your inner sociopath
Some days you're the free milk; other days you're the eloped cow
A long, long time ago, in a galaxy far awayThe Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legends. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. … In the days just preceding eternal September About twelve and a half years ago, I went to my first RASFWRJ social. Obviously, in those days, if you were meeting strange people from Usenet that you had never met before, they must be bomb-makers, stalkers, and perverts.

Well, I didn't meet any of those, but I did meet up with someone else that I'd known from before I'd wandered off to college. And as he (jokingly) fell under the pervert column, it was deemed that I needed protection from him. Hence, in my (oh, Elath, long-ago and much, much younger) youth I ran an application for Warders. I received many applicants; one stood head and shoulders above the rest.

I promised him a "Sword that is not a Sword" and a home-cooked meal if he was brave enough. He was, and just before the most recent (at the time) social of September 24, 1994, he joined me at my dorm for a home-cooked meal. We hung out for a while, went to the Social, and then hung out some more that night.

He's never gone away since! And while we've both had fun milking the cow for free, we decided to elope on our 12th anniversary.

If either BF or I were for big spectacles, many of you would have been there. However, we're not and we decided that marrying on our anniversary without fanfare was exactly what we needed to do. Hence why we ran away to Tahoe this past weekend. We were married on the California side of the border in our hiking clothes in a fairly quick ceremony. As should surprise very few of you, we went hiking afterwards, taking the gondolas up to the top of the Heavenly Ski Slopes and looking down on Lake Tahoe 3,000 feet below us.

We'll be leaving for Glacier/Waterton National Park & Yellowstone National Park on Saturday for our honeymoon.

As I've yet to convince BF to take my name, neither of us will be changing anything.

slothman, please let BF be the one to announce it at the office.

lbmango, feel free to spread through the family. I've told some, but not our mutual aunt (yet).

thetalkingmoose, same thing. BF's told his immediate family, but that's about it. Please let them know no names will be changed.

Yes, I do believe he said it best.

Thanks again!

Whoops! Thought you had a policy change there. Amending previous message to:
Congratulations! Hmmm... “[non-diminutive version of your husband’s first name] Hawk” sounds elegant and sinister...

Thanks! It's starting to feel (slightly) less surreal now...

Congratulations. The more I've seen, the bigger fan of the quiet wedding I've become.

And, yes, thank Elath for quiet weddings. Someone would probably have died if we had decided to do a "production".

Congratulations. And, in the spirit of pokeypenguin's comment above, I told my mother just today that should Mr. Darcy and I decide to tie the knot, it'll be something simple and inexpensive and she won't have to do a thing. (I have spent an embarrassing amount of money today in order to get to my brother's ocean- and International Date Line-spanning TWO wedding ceremonies, and apparently my folks are helping foot the bill on this side of the Pacific. Ye gods.)

Heh. Thanks, and I'm ALWAYS happy to be a rolemodel! *evil smirk*

You might want to edit this though, if you didn't realise you've used his name in the 5th paragraph.

Thanks and..

fuck! Argh. I took that from something that wasn't posted to the internet. Fixed now.

Many congratulations. I wish you all the very best for your continuing time together...

(And Damn, was it really just over 3 years ago that I actually got to meet some of you American Scary Internet types?)

Thank you so much.

And, yes, yes it was. We're all getting so old...

Congratulations, the pair of you! May your forthcoming years be as filled with happiness as the last dozen. Or with more, I'm not stingy.

Thanks! You don't think we did this too quickly? I mean, we only dated for a dozen years before we got married...

And considering how Scandawhovia has protections in place for those living together but not married, but the US doesn't have much, it's not surprising we married before your parents.

They live in unmarried person paradise for that sort of thing!

Now I gotta share you. Boo. *pouting*

Why do all my white friends get married on a whim? "What did you do this weekend? I..." "I got MARRIED!!!!" "...cleaned the bathroom."

merhawk From: merhawk Date: September 26th, 2006 01:00 am (UTC) (Permanent Entry Link)
Thanks Magenta, but if I've told you once, I've told you a thousand times... BF doesn't mind sharing, so long as he gets to be around. Sheesh. Nothin' changes here for us, darlin'.

And it wasn't on a whim. Well, okay, not much of one...

My sincerest congratulations, and my best wishes to you both.

Many years ago, you both and leighdb very kindly arranged a marvelous gathering of folks and a wonderful evening in San Francisco when I was on business, and for that I wanted to thank you both again.

And even more years ago, it was that very Warder Application contest -- and your BF's rasfwr-j page -- which were among the things that I stumbled across as a college freshman looking for rasfwr-j stuff, and which led me to start lurking; and five years later, join rasfwr-j, and everything which led beyond. And for that too, thank you.

Again, best wishes, and best of luck.

You've always marched to the beat of your own drum. And for that matter, been the drummer.

Many joys to you both.

*re-reads, figures it works either way...*

Best wishes to the both of you. May there be many more happy anniversaries!

So does this mean you'll be changing his abbreviation from BF to H? :)
merhawk From: merhawk Date: September 26th, 2006 01:01 am (UTC) (Permanent Entry Link)

And, no, BF will remain BF for various other reasons. I see no need to change his abbreviation.

Talk about great news to wake up to. Congratulations!

Heh. Better than the usual type of news you see?

And thank you!
